“وجهة نظري هي… إذا ذهبنا إلى المتاهة، فسنلتقي حتماً بشجرة الأرواح التالية، وحتى إذا نجحنا بأعجوبة في النجاة من تلك المواجهة، فستكون هناك التالية، ثم التالية. عاجلاً أم آجلاً، سنموت.”
كانت نيفيس لا تزال على الطرف الغربي للجزيرة، تحدق في المياه السوداء المتراجعة. وبدا أنها بالكاد تتحرك منذ آخر مرة رآها ساني.
للسفر بنفس القدر، وربما أكثر في يوم واحد… كان ذلك أمرًا لا يُصدق. لكن…
نظر إليها بعيون صافية، خالي من الآثار المنهكة لكونه منومًا، كان قادر على ملاحظة الأشياء التي لم يلاحظها من قبل.
كان شعر نيف أطول بالفعل. بالعودة إلى الأكاديمية، كان قصيرًأ وعادة ما ينفصل من الجانب. الآن كانت الخيوط الفضية طويلة بالفعل بما يكفي لتغطية أذنيها، وتتدلى بشكل فوضوي دون بريقها المعتاد.
