ففي “الشرق”، لم يكن هناك سوى مصباح شارع واحد لا يزال يعمل، أما البقية فكانت إما مكسورة أو محطّمة عمدًا، ولم يتكلف أحد عناء إصلاحها. نتيجة لذلك، كانت أماكن عديدة تغرق في ظلام دامس. البنايات المتداعية والمنخفضة، والطرقات غير المستوية، والأزقة المظلمة، جعلت من التنقل في المنطقة كابوسًا حقيقيًا. وبعد سلسلة جرائم “وايت تشابل”، أرسلت الشرطة كتيبة كاملة لتعزيز الأمن الذي بدأ يتلاشى.
الفتاة شعرت بفرحة غامرة، فلم يحدث أن صادفت زبونًا بهذا السخاء في حيّ فقير كهذا. لكنها ما لبثت أن تذكّرت كلامه السابق، فتبدّلت ملامحها فجأة. لم تكن تملك شيئًا يستحق هذه العملة… لا شيء سوى حياتها.
خلال جولته، مرّ “تشانغ هنغ” على دوريتين من رجال الشرطة بدوا شديدي الصرامة، ممسكين بهراواتهم وأفواههم تُمسك صافراتٍ جاهزة للنفخ عند أول طارئ. ومع ذلك، لم يكن نشر هذا العدد من الدوريات مجديًا تمامًا، فليس بوسع الشرطة مراقبة كل زاوية وركن. الأهم من ذلك، أنهم لم يكونوا قادرين على الحفاظ على هذا النوع من الدوريات المكثفة لفترة طويلة.
وأثناء توجههما إلى المطعم، رأى “تشانغ هنغ” العديد من البغايا الأخريات في الطرقات، يتمايلن ويتصنّعن الإثارة في الحانات والأزقة، محاولات اجتذاب الزبائن بأي وسيلة. كان بينهن عجائز تجاوزن الخمسين أو الستين من أعمارهن. نظريًا، كان يُفترض بهن التواري عن الأنظار بعد جرائم “جاك السفاح”، وأن لا تعود الشوارع آمنة إلا بعد القبض عليه. لكنّ ما رآه “تشانغ هنغ” كان عكس ذلك تمامًا.
في الواقع، كانت الشرطة قد زادت عدد أفرادها منذ ظهور الجريمة الثانية، لكن حتى الآن لم يحصلوا على أي خيط حقيقي. وبدأت شكاوى العناصر الدنيا تتعالى بسبب ساعات العمل الطويلة وضآلة الأجور. وقبل الجرائم، كان عناصر الدوريات غالبًا ما يتسللون إلى الحانات لشرب الجعة أثناء نوباتهم، لكن بعد موجة القتل، لم يعد أحد يجرؤ على تكرار هذا السلوك.

الفتاة شعرت بفرحة غامرة، فلم يحدث أن صادفت زبونًا بهذا السخاء في حيّ فقير كهذا. لكنها ما لبثت أن تذكّرت كلامه السابق، فتبدّلت ملامحها فجأة. لم تكن تملك شيئًا يستحق هذه العملة… لا شيء سوى حياتها.
