حين عاد عيسى إلى المجمع البحثي كانت المدينة قد غرقت في سكونٍ ثقيل. لم تكن تلك السكينة المريحة التي تسبق النوم، بل سكينة المدن المتعبة التي أنهكتها السنوات حتى فقدت قدرتها على الضجيج. خلف الأسوار المرتفعة للمجمع وقفت الأبنية الخرسانية الضخمة متجاورة كالحصون القديمة، تتخللها ممرات طويلة مضاءة بأضواء بيضاء باهتة تمنح المكان برودة غريبة مهما ارتفعت درجات الحرارة في الخارج.

سار عيسى بخطوات هادئة عبر أحد الممرات. كان عدد العاملين قليلاً في هذا الوقت من الليل، ومع ذلك لم يجرؤ أحد على مقاطعته. بعض الباحثين رفعوا رؤوسهم عند مروره، ثم عادوا إلى أعمالهم سريعاً. لم يكن الخوف هو ما يدفعهم إلى ذلك، بل شعور غامض بالمسافة. فالرجل الذي كرّس سنوات عمره لمشروعٍ قد يغيّر مصير البشرية كلها بدا دائماً وكأنه يعيش في عالم منفصل عن بقية الناس.

توقف أمام باب مختبره للحظة قصيرة. امتدت يده إلى جهاز التعريف المثبت بجانب الباب، فانفرج المعدن الثقيل ببطء كاشفاً عن مساحة واسعة امتلأت بالشاشات والأجهزة والخرائط والملفات المتراكمة. لم يكن المختبر فوضوياً، لكنه حمل آثار سنوات طويلة من العمل المتواصل. عشرات الأوراق كانت موزعة فوق الطاولات، ومئات الملاحظات الصغيرة علقت على الجدران، بينما غطت الخرائط أجزاء كبيرة من المكان حتى بدا أقرب إلى غرفة قيادة منه إلى مختبر علمي.
