مرّ اليومان التاليان بثقلٍ غريب لم يعتده العاملون داخل المجمع البحثي. لم تقع حوادث جديدة، ولم يختفِ أحد، ولم تصدر أي إنذارات طارئة، ومع ذلك كان الشعور بالقلق يزداد مع كل ساعة تمر. بدا الأمر وكأن المبنى الضخم بأقسامه ومختبراته وأجهزته التي لا تنام قد أصبح ينتظر شيئاً لا يعرفه أحد، لكنه قادم لا محالة.

أما عيسى فقد دخل في عزلة شبه كاملة.
وكأن شخصاً ما يقف خلف الشاشة وينظر إليهم.

مرت الدقائق الأولى بهدوء.
فلم ينظر إلى الجملة.
فالنظام معزول بالكامل عن أي شبكة خارجية منذ سنوات.
بل إلى الوقت الذي ظهرت فيه.
ثم تحولت إلى نمط.
لأنه أدرك شيئاً أخطر.
ثم عادت الكهرباء.
شيئاً لم يلاحظه أحد غيره.
منذ حادثة الاختفاء لم يعد يهتم بالاجتماعات الجانبية ولا بالنقاشات الإدارية التي كانت تستهلك وقت كبار المسؤولين. أغلق على نفسه أبواب المختبر المركزي، وبدأ بمراجعة كل سجل رقمي أُنشئ منذ بدء المشروع. كانت مهمة أقرب إلى المستحيل، لكن الذين عرفوه جيداً كانوا يعلمون أن أكثر صفاته خطورة ليست ذكاءه ولا نفوذه، بل إصراره. فإذا اقتنع بوجود شيء ما فلن يتوقف حتى يجده.
