اقترب الوحش وأخذ يدور حول حمزة كصياد يراقب فريسته، مستعدًا للانقضاض في أي لحظة، فيما حاول بصعوبة أن يقف ويحافظ على توازنه فوق القطعة الخشبية.
«هيَّا انهض وقاتل! يجب أن تكون أقوى!»
لمس السيف الملفوف على ظهره، ذلك السيف الذي لطالما تجنب استخدامه. شعر بقلبه ينبض بقوة وتمتم بصوت يائس: «لا يمكنني هزيمة هذا الوحش بسيف عادي…»
تردد لحظات وهو يتحسس اللفافة، قبل أن تهاجمه الذكريات…

عاد حمزة إلى واقعه ويده ما تزال ممسكة باللفافة. وفي تردد خافت مدّ يده إلى مقبضه، ثم أزال اللفافة التي كانت تغطيه وسحب السيف من غمده. وبمجرد أن كشف نصله، اندلعت منه نيران حمراء مظلمة أحاطت به بقوة عاتية.
حاول حمزة السيطرة عليه قائلًا: «أعلم أنك كالوحش، وعليّ ترويضك.» ثم لوّح بالسيف في الهواء واستعد لتوجيه ضربة إلى الوحش.

اندفع بكل قوته وهوى بالسيف موجهًا ضربة قوية نحو البحر، وأطلق صرخة تعبر عن إرادته التي لا تلين:

ووسط الأمواج المتلاطمة ظهر جسد باسل على السطح فاقدًا للوعي. فقفز حمزة نحوه وأمسك به قبل أن يغرق، ثم أخذ يسبح به نحو الجزيرة رغم اضطراب البحر وهو يقول: «لن أتركك تموت يا باسل. لقد قطعنا شوطًا طويلًا معًا، وسنكمل هذه الرحلة مهما كلف الأمر.»
