ظلال تحت الطوف
بعد ساعات من السفر، وصلا أخيرًا إلى شاطئ بحر واسع حيث بدت جزيرة تلوح في الأفق. لم يجدا وسيلة لعبور البحر، فشرعا في جمع الأخشاب القريبة وصنع طوف متين مستخدمين كل ما توفر لديهما من موارد.
ارتسم الأسى على وجه حمزة. «آسف لسماع ذلك. لم أكن أعلم أنك مررت بكل هذا. لكن عليك أن تعلم أنك بفضلها أيضا أنقذتنا من تلك المرأة المخيفة في الغابة، واستطعت التحكم في ذلك المخلوق واستخدامه للوصول إلى الشاطئ.»

وما إن فرغا من العمل الشاق حتى وقفا أمام الطوف المكتمل مستعدين للعبور نحو الجزيرة المجهولة، ثم دفعاه إلى الماء واستقرا فوقه يتطلعان إلى وجهتهما بنظرات مترقبة، وقد بدأا يشعران بشيء من الارتياح بعدما نجحا في صنع وسيلة لعبور البحر.

وبينما كانا يشقان طريقهما في عرض البحر على الطوف الخشبي، وسط جو هادئ ورياح خفيفة تحرك الأمواج بلطف، راقب حمزة باسل وهو يلف القماش حول يده محاولًا إخفاء العلامة، فأثار ذلك فضوله. «باسل، لماذا تحاول دائما إخفاء العلامة على يدك؟ وما هذا النقش في ذراعك؟ هل له علاقة بها؟»
