شديدة البأس، هي الآن في بداية الفصل الجديد، ولم يبق معها إلا ثلاث فتيات لأسباب غير معروفة…
يومًا تلو الآخر…!
كانت بياتريكس تجلس على مقعدها متأملة ومحتارة، مثل الجميع، عن ماهية هذا الوافد الجديد، رين. لاحظت من طرف عينيها نفس بريق الاهتمام الذي كان في أعين الجميع على رين… الإيماءات المبالغ فيها، أو نبرة حديثها المليئة بالطاقة… سبق الاستغراب البغض؛ كيف لها أن تحظى بما هو ملك لها، الأنظار، بمجرد حديث؟
هذا ما قلته… ولا تعلم حقًا، لم مجددًا يعود كلامها عليها كمن ينتظر بعاصفة، فيختاره البرق أولاً…

إذن، لماذا هي مأخوذة بالإنتقاص؟
لماذا لا تجعل من رين صديقة لها؟ سترجع الاهتمام المستحق لها، وستحظى رين بشرف أن تصبح صديقتها الأقرب. عرض لن يرفضه إلا معتوه، فتمتمت بسرور:
قررت الوقوف ومحاولة الانضمام لمجموعة أخرى، لكن عندما اقتربت ولاحظتها المجموعة، تلاشت بهجتهن. تذمرت إحداهن وسألتها ببرود:

ثم صرخت بحنق وهي تكشر أيديها:
“أنا أرفض.”
تنفست بخشونة، هدأت نفسها، ذعرت لأنها أول مرة ترى بياتريكس تبكي…
“لو امتلكت عشر ما تملكينه لكنت في أقصى سعادتي، لكن الحياة منصفة بطريقتها الخاصة. الآن، لم يعد لديك أحد، الكل يكرهك… ونحن أيضًا، أنا وكاثي وسارة، لو لم يجبرنا آباؤنا على الالتصاق بك لأن عائلتك ثرية، لكنا ابتعدنا عنك منذ البداية كما فعل الجميع.”
“كيف ترفضين، ياتريكس!؟”

نظرت رين إليها ببلادة، دون أن تقول شيئًا، وذهبت لتجلس في مقعدها. لم ترغب بإظهار الهزيمة، فعادت كما لو لم يحدث شيء. كما أبدت الفتيات دعمهن، أعطت لرين نظرة أخيرة متمتمة:
“حمقاء…”

“أنت تعيشين في قصر، سافرت أكثر من مرة خارج البلاد، غرفتك جميلة واسعة، وهي لوحدك بالكامل، لديك حديقة جميلة مليئة بالأزهار تشبه حديقة من قصص خيالية، ألعاب ودمى لا تعد ولا تحصى، رفوف كاملة من الملابس الجميلة، خدم يلبون احتياجاتك، يعدون لك الطعام إن كنت جائعة، يسلونك إن شعرت بالوحدة أو الملل… ولديك الكثير والكثير…”
“لماذا…؟؟ اعتقدت أننا صديقتان.”
آه، خطئي، بقيت معها واحدة فقط؛ الاثنتان نُقلتا للفصل المجاور مع بداية العام الدراسي…
ثم صرخت بحنق وهي تكشر أيديها:

شديدة البأس، هي الآن في بداية الفصل الجديد، ولم يبق معها إلا ثلاث فتيات لأسباب غير معروفة…

هكذا ظلت لوحدها لأيام. في تلك الأيام اقترح المعلم تعيين رئيسة للفصل، ولم يذكرها أحد.

نزعت نظارتها، سقطت الدموع من أعينها، لفظت أنفاسها، لم ترد النظر لبياتريكس، كانت تنظر لأسفل… أكملت بنبرة ساخرة:
لماذا لا تجعل من رين صديقة لها؟ سترجع الاهتمام المستحق لها، وستحظى رين بشرف أن تصبح صديقتها الأقرب. عرض لن يرفضه إلا معتوه، فتمتمت بسرور:

مسحت دموعها وسمعت صوت شهيق مفاجئ، ثم رفعت رأسها ببطء.

بياتريكس تجثو على ركبتيها، تبكي، أيديها تقبض على قلبها، صوت بكائها خافت لكنه مليء بالحرقة…
ذعرت لارا مجددًا، خرجت مسرعة، مشت خارجًا، ثم ركضت بسرعة، ثم توقفت.
لم ترغب أن تفقد أعصابها، فذهبت وجلست.
تنفست بخشونة، هدأت نفسها، ذعرت لأنها أول مرة ترى بياتريكس تبكي…
ثم أتتها فكرة، أخذت عدة أنفاس سريعة، ثم جمعت الدموع في زوايا عينيها، أكملت سيرها في اتجاه الفصل، ثم دخلت الفصل بمنظرها الباكي. رأتها إحدى صديقاتها فهرعت إليها:

سكنت، قهقهت قليلاً، ثم ضحكت، شعرت بالخفة:
“لم أعلم أنه من السهل جعلها تبكي، لا أدري لماذا كنت خائفة منها…”
“أنا أمقتك… أكرهك وأبغضك من أعماق قلبي…”
ثم أتتها فكرة، أخذت عدة أنفاس سريعة، ثم جمعت الدموع في زوايا عينيها، أكملت سيرها في اتجاه الفصل، ثم دخلت الفصل بمنظرها الباكي. رأتها إحدى صديقاتها فهرعت إليها:
“لارا…!؟”
“سأخبرك بشيء لطالما أردت أن أقوله في وجهك.”
اجتمعت صديقاتها، وهي تشهق وأخبرتهن بما حدث:
يومًا تلو الآخر…!
“إن لم تقدري التغلب على عدوك، فضميه لصفك.”

بدأت الحصة، وعادت بياتريكس متأخرة، عاتبتها المعلمة قليلًا، ثم طلبت منها
أن تجلس.
فهوجمت:
نظرت بياتريكس للفصل، وكانت معظم الفتيات ينظرن إليها ويحدقن بشكل غريب، نظرات غاضبة… اعتادت على تجاهل الفتيات لها، فنست الأمر…
