يتأرجح قليلًا… رغم غياب أي نسمة ريح.
ورغم أن كايل لم يكن مدركًا تمامًا لقوة الشذوذ، فإنه كان واثقًا إلى حدٍّ ما من قدرته على كسب ما يكفي من الوقت حتى تصل النقابة قبل فوات الأوان.

ابتسامته تضاءلت قليلًا، لكنها ما زالت مرتسمة.
طريق طويل خالٍ تصطف على جانبيه بيوت متطابقة، لكل منها حديقة مقصوصة بعناية ومرأب صغير.
إلا أنّ فراغ المكان جعله يدرك أن المهمة أصعب بكثير مما توقع.
لكن ثمة ما كان… غريبًا.
تلا ذلك صوت ناعم حادّ، صرير مرتفع على نحو غير طبيعي، يثير الضيق، فيما هبط التوتر فجأة على المكان، مغلّفًا الأجواء.
كان الصمت مطبقًا حد الموت.
تفاعلت زوي، وتمكّن كايل من الإفاقة جزئيًا.
الشخصيات المرحة المعتادة التي كانت تلوّح من الشرفات اختفت.

الهواء ساكن.

وما إن سحبت قدمها للخلف، حتى ثبت بصرها على نقطة معينة في البعيد.

بخلاف ما سبق، صرت قادرًا على تحريك يدي وجسدي قليلًا، لكنني كنت أعلم أنّ أي حركة ضئيلة ستنبه الفتاة.
انحنى رأسه قليلًا إلى جانب واحد، وشعره الأحمر المجعد ملتصق بوجه شاحب يكاد يشبه الشمع. كان واقفًا بلا حراك، أشبه بدمية ماريونيت تنتظر شدّ خيوطها.

بتمعّن النظر، بدا أنّ كل شخص يحمل غرضًا مميزًا يخص المهرّج، وفهم كايل وزوي على الفور ما الذي يجري.
الفتاة الصغيرة… لقد كانت مشتّتة في تلك اللحظة، على الأرجح لانشغالها بالتعامل مع كايل وزوي.
رفع رأسه على عجل، فتعلّقت عيناه مباشرة بشخصية المهرّج الواقفة أمامه، وابتسامتها مقلوبة على نحو مروّع. كان الجلد حول فمه متشقّقًا، وكأنّ انقلاب الابتسامة المفاجئ قد شقّ ابتسامةً متحجّرة منذ زمن بعيد.

غُرست في نفسي كايل وزوي إحساس غريب. شيء ما في البالون كان يشدّهما بقوة.
لم يتبقَ سوى أمتار قليلة.
الشخصيات المرحة المعتادة التي كانت تلوّح من الشرفات اختفت.

رغم الموقف، لم يتوقف عقله عن الغليان بالأفكار.
