فهذا، ببساطة، شرط سيف القمر.
وقف العجوز بهدوء فوق السرير، ثم أطلق تنهيدة عميقة، وفجأة—ومن دون أي إنذار—اختفى تمامًا. لم يبقَ في الغرفة سوى النار المشتعلة التي كانت تضيء المكان الخالي، وآثار الدماء الملطخة على الأرضية الخشبية، والتي بدأت ترتعش بخفة، وكأن المنزل نفسه يتنفس. كان المشهد جميلًا على نحوٍ مقلق، وغير مريح على نحوٍ لا يمكن تجاهله.
لكن الوحش اختفى فجأة، تاركًا اللاشيء.
على الدرج، كان سامي وكاي ينزلان بأقصى سرعة ممكنة، يحملان صغير النسر بينهما، بعد أن تمكّنا بطريقة ما من إخراج البقية من المعادلة. فالهروب من وحش كهذا برفقة سبعة أشخاص غير قادرين على القتال كان أمرًا مستحيلًا تمامًا. وهو ما أدركه سامي بسرعة ووجد له حلًا حاسمًا.

في الثواني القليلة التي استغرقها النزول على الدرج، ألقى كاي نظرة سريعة على سامي، امتلأت بالحيرة والارتباك. ردّ سامي عليه بجملة واحدة، رافعًا يده اليمنى، حيث ظهر صندوق أسود صغير ملتف بحبال بنفس اللون.
فجأة، بدأت تيارات الهواء تلتف حوله، وارتسم على وجهه تعبير ممتعض. دفع كمية هائلة من الهواء إلى الخلف، وانطلق كرصاصة خاطفة نحو الوحش، موجّهًا سيفه بشكل عرضي. قطع رأسه للمرة الثانية.
“إنهم هنا!”

كان كاي أول من توقف فجأة، ممسكًا بالحائط الخشبي إلى جانبه، وصغير النسر على كتفه. أطلق زمجرة يائسة، كأنها خرجت من صدرٍ مختنق:

كان كاي قد بلغ أقصى حدوده، وعيناه تشتعلان حقدًا. بصق إلى جانبه، لكنه لم يُتح له الكلام، إذ سبقه سامي بصوتٍ بارد وحاد:

ما إن سمع العجوز الاسم حتى ارتعش جسده بعنف. تلوّنت عيناه، واتسعتا بوهجٍ أحمر مرعب. بدأ شكله البشري يذوب ويتلاشى، فيما تحوّل جسده تدريجيًا إلى خشب بنفسجي قاتم. أطلق صرخة مدوية، ثم اندفع نحو سامي.

أعاد سامي جسده إلى الخلف، خفّض جذعه، وسحب ذراعيه للخلف، ثم انطلق في طعنة مستقيمة. كان يعرف نفسه، ويعرف ما يريد قطعه. وكان سيقطع.

بدأت الغرفة نفسها تنكمش، تتقلص من الجانبين نحو المنتصف. خرج الشكل الخشبي من الطاولة، وكأنه جزء طبيعي من جسد الوحش. قفز سامي بسرعة من البقعة التي كان يقف عليها، وفي اللحظة التي ابتعد فيها، انبثقت أيدٍ خشبية من الأرض في تصفيقة قاتلة.
